A bone spur is a smooth, boney growth on a normal bone. They usually occur when a bone is repairing itself. Bone spurs can cause pain and wear and tear to the surrounding tissue. They can be the result of injury or part of the normal process of aging. Bone spurs can develop in the spine, shoulders, hands, hips, knees, and feet.
Symptoms result from bone spurs are pressing other bones or tissues. The most common symptoms are pain, tingling, numbness or weakness. Symptoms may vary by individual. Bone spurs that develop in the foot can cause calluses when tissue builds over the spur.
Treatment for a bone spur depends on how much pain a patient is suffering. Conservative treatments include physical therapy and medication. If the patient doesn’t get relief, epidural injections may be considered. As a last resort, surgery may be necessary. Surgery could involve a large incision, substantial bone and muscle removal, blood loss, general anesthesia, and several days in the hospital. Post-op recovery could range from a few months to a year.
