Endoscopic Laser Facet Rhizotomy is used to relieve chronic low back pain, failed back surgery syndrome, facet joint arthritis, facet joint injuries, facet hypertrophy and whip lash syndromes. Generally, a patient in need of this procedure experiences back pain for more than 6 weeks and conservative treatments fail to work, the patient frequently has muscle spasms or palpitations of the facet joint or the patient has limited range of motion of the lumbar spine.
During Endoscopic Laser Facet Rhizotomy, the patient is under local anesthesia. X-rays are then used to mark the surgical targets. A small incision is made at the targets and using a tube, the endoscope is placed and the nerve branches are located. The nerve branches are deadened using laser light.
