Expert Sciatica Physician in New Jersey
Any irritation of the nerve roots traversing the sciatic nerve can create numbness, tingling, or a sharp pain known as sciatica. The nerve roots, originating in the spinal cord, reach into the lower back to form the sciatic nerve. Traveling down past the buttock, it branches out and continues past the posterior of the leg down to the foot and ankle. A ruptured or bulging spinal disc pressing against the nerve roots leading to the sciatic nerve is the most prevalent cause of sciatica. At Coastal Back and Pain Institute in NJ, our sciatica dr and team of experts are trained to diagnose and treat this painful, debilitating condition.
Symptoms of Sciatica
Many people experiencing sciatica obtain relief from their pain with non-surgical treatment and usually improve in a few weeks to a couple of months. However, for others, sciatica can be severe and debilitating. A detailed MRI of the vertebral disc is the best test to provide a look at the affected area. A leg EMG does not detect herniated discs and is non-specific, but can indicate affected muscle groups. Symptoms of sciatica include:
- Weakness in the knees
- Aggravated by prolonged sitting
- Made worse when coughing or sneezing
- Usually only affects one side of your body
- Sharp, burning sensation, excruciating pain, or mild ache
- Pain radiating from your lower spine, down the back of your leg
While mild sciatica usually dissipates over time, please contact our office if your pain is lasts a week or longer, is severe, becomes progressively worse, or if self-care measures fail to ease your symptoms.
